Herringbone Outdoor Bar Console

Back in May 2023, this build was the largest and probably the heaviest build we’ve made. Back in 2022 I made my first piece of furniture for Amy from Styled by Abs and her family. It was our Herringbone Mini-Fridge Console.

This is from her instagram.and it’s styled so beautifully in her home. Well she loved it so much that she wanted me to build her a HUGE one to go outside with a sink. The Outdoor Bar Console is 132″L x 28″D x 39″H. The most important part about this build was the wood. What is best to withstand the elements. It was going in a covered area and it was going to be covered in the cold seasons, so after talking it over with our wood supplier we chose African Sapele. It’s strong, stable and durable. I want to add HEAVY!!

We built it in two pieces. The left side has all the storage, middle is the Mini-Fridge area which then connects to the right piece that has the sink and storage underneath. They are connected using Festool Connectors.

The top length in these pictures is 12ft. I had to recruit help for this top, so together we built it with a lot of Festool dominos, glue and 10 clamps. If I remember right we had to have the kids come out and help us lower it down on the table.

Here’s the top completed. You can see the sink at the end. Im so happy they include templates with sinks, because we just traced that onto the top and said a little prayer when we started cutting into the 2″ thick top. We slipped the sink in and it was perfect.

A close up of the Herringbone Pattern. I’m so bummed because I really thought I took pictures of the process in making the herringbone panels. The herringbone pattern is 3/4″ thick African Sapele. It’s so beautiful and my favorite part on the build. We made 7 herringbone panels.

In the beginning the base was going to be black and the herringbone panels stained, but when we got this far we all decided it was just so beautiful all natural. We sealed it with a few coats of exterior poly and after a few days of drying we installed all the hardware. Instead Amy & I thought the hardware in black would be enough of an accent color. She ordered the hardware for the doors and we had to customize the sliding door hardware because no one sells 10ft barn door hardware for bypass doors.

Pick up day came and it was loaded. Very, very carefully.

Then days later I received these beautiful pics from Amy, with it all set up.

If you visit Amy’s instagram page, you’ll see a video of it all set-up.
